The Royal Melbourne Wine Show has been an annual fixture since 1884, when it was established by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) to support and promote excellence in Australian winemaking. Today, it is one of Australia's most respected wine shows, in 2011 attracting 3298 entries from 538 exhibitors.
Thanks to the support, commitment and participation of the wine industry, RMWS is the benchmark for Australian wine and at the forefront of wine style evolution and winemaking trends. Keeping in step with the industry, this year the Royal Melbourne Wine Show introduced a progressive and diverse judging panel, Preshow and Exhibitors Tasting Masterclasses to provide an insight from the judges, a range of new classes and a trophy. Importantly, 2011 marks the 50th presentation of the prestigious Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy.
50th Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy
2011 marked the 50th presentation of the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy, awarded to Nick Glaetzer for Glaetzer-Dixon Mon Pere Shiraz 2010. To celebrate this special anniversary, the RASV honoured past Jimmy Watson winemakers at the 2011 Royal Melbourne Show Awards Presentation, composing a history of Australia’s favourite wine trophy and compiling photos of past winners – the Jimmy Watson Trophy Facebook gallery.
